Rockefeller Center announced the opportunity to design flags several weeks ago: “this summer we will raise your artwork on the 192 flagpoles around the rink to celebrate New York’s diverse culture, vibrant energy and strength. The prompt is simple: Show your love for New York”.
Our description: we are Shoko Kambara and Gregory Gale, two theater and film designers working in NYC and worldwide. We created a flag together to show our love of NYC and to show how NYC welcomes public demonstrations of different viewpoints and constantly evolves as a city. In our flag, the cityscape of NYC is made up of a lot of colors to represent how this melting pot energizes the city and makes it a place where people can feel at home regardless of their differences. In our imagination, the more experiences - good and bad, the more changes, the more protests, etc, add color to the city that we love and make it more interesting and textured and beautiful as it grows.
