During the 2020 holiday season, I was yearning for an escape, so Shoko Kamabara, Alex Hawthorn, and myself created a virtual version of the beloved nutcracker fable. This classic story was turned into a two-act ballet in 1892 from E. T. A. Hoffmann’s 1816 story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” and with a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
For our reconceptualized version Shoko created the backgrounds and animation, Alex the music, and I created the characters. In creating the designs, I incorporated inspiration from modern fashion, costume history, armor, and classic ballet looks.
We are hoping to create a live version in 2021.
